Asylum Cigars is the brainchild of Tom Lazuka and Christian Eiroa. Lazuka, formerly a representative for Colibri, became involved with Camacho when that company was under the direction of the Eiroas. When the Camacho brand was subsequently purchased by Davidoff of Geneva in 2012, Christian, Tom, and then-partner Kevin Baxter decided to launch an affordable boutique line of Nicaraguan blends called Asylum.
The original three lines – Asylum Premium, Asylum 13, and Straight Jacket – are Nicaraguan puros, as is the later mixed-fill release, an economy line called Schizo. The recently-released Schizo Maduro, however, is a Honduran blend. Other notable Asylum cigars include the Ogre (a “barber-pole” featuring a dual wrapper of habano and candela leaves) and Asylum 13 Connecticut, an extremely flavorful mild cigar. Asylum is known for pushing the boundaries of girth: they currently offer several cigars in massive 70 and 80 ring gauges.
